Kultūriniai skirtumai

Toks banalus dalykas rodos, bet stringa man jau metus. Šiandien ryte nuvažiavau apsipirkti pusryčiams prancūziškam stiliui - bandelės :) Savaitės bėgyje aš buvau užšokus į boulangerie bagetės ir pasiteiravau kada gi jie ruošiasi iškepti mano pamėgtas bandeles su kremu viduj (aš juk dievinu sviestinį kremą..). O gi pasirodo kada aš paprašysiu, o paklausiau aš dėl šeštadienio. Be abejo, kaip normalus žmogus aš šeštadieni ilgai miegojau ir iki boulangerie nusigavau prieš 11. Man pasakė 'desolee' ir davė į rankas kažką supakuoto panašaus į bandelę. Ok, aš apsidžiaugiau ir nuėjau į šalią įsikurusį supermarketą nusipirkti grietinės (mane kankina neramumai kai jos nėra šaldytuve). Ir žinokit eilini karta nusivyliau juo. Anksčiau man ten vis ką nors neteisingai paskaičiuodavo, poto pasikeitė pas juos sistema, elektroninės kainos pasidarė.
- su kasininkėm neplepa, na nebent apsikeičia keliom frazėm;

Parfumerie Galimard

In the town of Grasse, there are three main parfumerie shops: Fragonard (the most famous, to the famous painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard), Galimard and Molinard. Looks like they are coming from the same family, doesn't it? But they don't :) And by the way, the right pronunciation is without last letter ('d') as always in French. So, the last week-end we with my friend visiting Erxon went to visit Galimard parfumerie searching for a special perfume for him. Also, we went to the one where mesuem of perfumes is situated, in the suburb of Grasse. Galimard personal have suprised us by offering a guide in russian just for two of us. At the end instead of 20min we had an hour and half. That was really interesting tour, now I know how did Grasse started massivly to produce perfumes: some women from a well-known family gave a task to make her leather gloves smell well and not to be oilish. So, the guy invented another way of making a perfume and his method became very popular. Now about 60% of world perfumes are made in Grasse. And Galimard is the most ancient from three of these. They produce about one new 'formula' in a year.

Another thing I got appointed was Lavender oil and it's healing abilities. As this region of Alpes-Maritimes is famous for fields of Lavender, you can find it in every town. And now it's time of their blossom. If somewhere else I would have been told about its supa-dupa qualities, I would thought that a person telling me that is just another grandma crazy about the herbs. Anyway, we tried it on practice already, my friend had a sunburn and it appeard to work really superb! Nice smell and fast results :) And also, it helps to get rid of mosquitoes!!!

Ok, back to perfumes... the best thing about them was that they smell natural. The most natural they could be... Flowers, chocolate, vanilla and etc. For example, Citrus smell this season is the most popular (in case if you are going step by step with fashion trends). Another good offer was to use an elixir of several flowers mixed with small shiny particles, just for going out somewhere in the evening :)

At the end I ended up with a bottle of Lavender and live happily ever after :) No pictures so far, but a bunch of interesting things were explored!

Fuel strike!

Truck drivers demonstration on Monday from 6:00 AM:
- semi-block of access to Nice airport
- slow movement on A8 motorway

C'est la vie en France :)

I start to think that this may be the reason why I was late to get to Nice airport by bus last time when was going to Lithuania. I got stuck on the motorway in a huge jam and as a result I had to pay for the car parking at the airport. Merde!

I see the Chivers anyway

The French guy was very inspired this year by Eurovision contest :)) Oh, I just adore him!

Update: Actually, looks like this post attracts a big number of visitors from Europe wondering around about the 'Chivers' :) It happened so that I do know where does it come from - it's taken from a French movie "Steak" and is about a group of guys, calling themselves Chivers, and behaving according to a certain funny rules.

Festival de Cannes 2008

Festival in Cannes is going on currently, it's a second week and this Sunday it's going to close. For this reason, lots of people all over the world are gathering in Côte d'Azur. Yesteday I and my colleague have visited it in the evening. The main aim was to watch an old movie filmed by Clint Eastwood in 70ies which was filmed in San Francisco :) All this was organized on the beach in Cannes, in the evening. Before the movie there was a band playing Twin Peaks sound track until it gets dark. The atmosphere was unforgettable... The surprise was to see Clint Eastwood on the same scene just before the movie and to make a nice shot of him.

Messed up Grand Prix de Monaco

The subject of this day was to get to Grand Prix in Monaco, which starts today, test drives. The tickets are most affordable, up to 70 euro. So today in the morning a took all my equipment with me, all batteries, free memory card and was getting ready to leave the office during the lunch to spend half day in Monaco. As festival in Cannes is still going on and all towns are filled with tourists, you cannot hope too much to find parking slots in Monaco. The fastest way to get there is of course by train from Antibes, Cannes and so on. At 12.30 or so I was buying the tickets for the train in Antibes railway station, pretty expensive ~10 euro round-trip. However, after I bought, a guard came up with some questions about the train I need. And of course with a answer: today no train to Monaco, it's a strike!
... of course the tickets must be refunded, of course there is a huge queue as it's a lunch time (thanks God they were not on the strike). At 13:00 or so the money were back to the credit card. But the problem with going by a car is that it's about 50km and it's about 20-30min to walk. The French people at that moment became enemies. And ok, maybe they have their reasons for a strike, but comm'on, most of the people in France already have unreal possibilities at work. They have lots of vacations, lots of subsidies, and other stuff. I think that they just don't get it at all. They got used to it, you strike and get what you want, just like Lithuanians got used to do not believe in their government and now most do not really care who will be next ruler of the country, they vote for artists or just skip...
And you know what is the funniest thing about French? From my knowledge about them, I bet they think of the strike something like: "C'est la vie..." cause it's their answer to many questions. Now I could say: "C'est la France" :)

P.S. By the way... it's not only France. The same thing has happened about two weeks ago in Italy.

A capital of love

Recently I was visiting a capital of love (and continue living in capital of perfume :) ). As a proof, I uploaded two traditional pictures of Paris. But they were taken from hands :) The Chappell was lighten enough, but neither tripod, neither rock were found on top of the Triumph Arc.

I will tell one good thing about my trip as a tip, which I discovered by accident. I was visiting Paris at the beginning of March for a week-end and it appeared that a number of museums are free to enter during the first Sunday of each month. As for off-season time like November-March, the list of free museums is expanded. However, the museum of Science, which is in the list of must-see, isn't one of them.

Titre de séjour

From today on I have a card called "Titre de séjour" in French and in English it's Resident permit. Bravo! After 5 month french government administration finished it and was ready to give me the permit to live in France until October 2008. Before that I was still living legally, but had temporal permit for 3 months only, which means I received 3 of them. The good news is that I did almost nothing to get "Titre de séjour" as the administration of my employer is very helpful and saves lots of nerves by doing all that paper work :)

Boulangerie

I had some thoughts recently: I am in France for some time already, but do not mention "Bounlagerie" at all. Like I wasn't living in France :) Cause Boulangeries play crucial role in French daily life. Despite the fact that most people are used to visiting supermarkets, French could not survive without Boulangerie. Supermarkets in France, like in most of European countries, are open from 8-9h until 19:30-22:00h. And of course, they do not work on Sundays, only some of them and until 12:00. People get used to this timetable, however, Boulangeries work despite this timetable every day, from 7:00h, sometimes even 6:30, until 19:00 or even 21:00, which usually depends on the place of Boulangerie. I bet in Nice you could find some working up to 22:00 :)

So what's so special about Boulangerie? Do supermarkets sell no bread?! Of course not! They do sell, they do sell "Patisserie" also, but at this point don't forget what gourmands French people are. The quality for them is extremely important.
An example of typical Boulangerie

It is also common to see Boulangerie-Patisserie synergy, for example:

An example of Boulangerie-Patisserie

The reason for me to remember such an important part of French lifestyle was that I had my first visitors, who, of course, wanted to spend their free days as cool as possible in French Riviera.

  • Monaco, at day and at night
  • Apple cider with 2% of alcohol, substitutes lemonade
  • Discovering that even white wine can be very sweet
  • Crêpes - thin pancakes
  • Boulangerie with it's desserts
And I believe it was longer for the newcomers. However, having a piece of flan with a cup of café-crème in the early morning makes me feel the environment I live in much more better.

French lifestyle

Recently I finished reading "A year in the Merde", which reveals some tricky and funny moments of the life in France. However, it's not really too much applicable to the Southern part of the country where I am recentrly dislocated. Maybe because of the tourists, but let's say that still 2/3 or 1/2 is true in any case. The coolest part was sarcastic style of the author :) After such inspiration the real interest to the history is wakening up. Strange enough, while living here you want to know more about the history of the country, Europe, it may explain some facts.

One more similar thing: as an author of another blog on topic of Southern France mentions the strange habit of sending a number of letters (not e-mails!) from most of the companies or instritutions you are dealing with - it's a waste of money - still for most of the new countries that joined EU is much more easier to build new and better infrastructure then for old ones to change their old and together change people. I believe this is a real advantage of young countries, however still having a good list of 'other side' :)

Parfumerie Fragonard

This weekend I made an exploration of the famous parfumerie industry in Grasse. There are I think 3 well known names and one of the most famous and old is Fragonard (you will find this name in many guidebooks). The building looks like one of the shops in Cannes:

Fragonard, Grasse

But inside the building there is a hidden laboratory! You walk through the long corridor and can see the process of a new scent creation.

Fragonard laboratory

As the result, you can get a well wrapped product :)

Fragonard perfumes

The ground floor of the building is a shop of various Fragonard products: from perfumes to soap. The whole atmosphere is full of different scents, however it is still possible to choose the one you like.

Wine tasting party

Taigi, per sias iseigines pagaliau padariau tai, ka seniai norejau padaryt perskaicius ivadinius strapsnius vynogide. Todel kai tik pamaciau naujai atrastoj pardoj teisinga vyno pasirinkima (teisingas man siuo atveju nemaisytu vynuogiu vynai ir pigiai, ale ~2eu), tai ir griebiau atskiru vynuogiu rusiu vynus. Stai cia yra tie vynai, kuriuos teko paragaut:

Sauvignon Blanc, Carbernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Gamay

Trumpai uzfiksuosiu ispudzius apie kiekviena (is kaires i desine):

  1. Sauvignon Blanc. Baltas. Tikejausi sauso, bet is tikro jis rugstus ir maziausias sausas is vysu situ vynu. Su zuvim turetu but super.
  2. Cabernet Sauvignon. Raudonas, maisytos 2 vynuoges. Sausiausias is visu, bet sodrus skonis.
  3. Merlot. Raudonas. Su mesa turetu but pats tas.
  4. Syrah. Raudonas.
  5. Gamay. Raudonas. Gaivus, panasus i stalo vyna.
Sia degustacija verta apturet geriant prancuziskus vynus, kadangi jie labai daznai gaminami maisant skirtingas vynuogiu rusis ir aisku tai apsunkina vyno issirinkimo procesa vien pagal jo kilme. Beje, italiskam vynui galioja visiskai priesinga taisykle: vynuoges dazniausiai nemaisomos, o ir vynus jie labiau megsta saldzius.

Pastabele:

Tetanus - WTH?

Ar girdeje? Prancuzai man rodos pamise del sitos vakcinos... Siandien antra karta apsilankiau pas gydytoja (emigrantu med. apziura - ieskojo tuberkuliozes :D ) ir vel man knisa prota apie Tetanus. Su pirma tai buvo taip:

- Kada paskutini karta skiepyta?
- Nzn...
- O Tetanus vakcina kada gavai?
- Ka?
- Tetanus (ir rodo ant ranku kazka...)
- Nzn tokios.
- Aha, supratau. Bet nzn kada mane paskutini karta skiepyjo, seniai, mokykloj...
- *&$*^&(#^*&$ (prancuziskai, visiskai neaisku kas...)
- O tai ka man reikia padaryt? Ateit pas jus veliau, pasiskiepyjus?
- Paskambini tevam paklausti del vakcinos. (Angliskai!)
- O poto pas jus ateit?
- Nee, cia tau paciai!!!

Prisipazinsiu, sunku buvo nenusikeikti... Bet ispradziau sypsena. Ir tada pagaliau istrukau is jos. Sarasas sudaromas pagal numeri, kuriuo tu pas juos atejai. As pavelavau - buvau 7-a. Pradzioj kviecia pas sesele. Darbuotojai cia jau pasiruose: uzejus pirmas klausimas "Vous parle francais?". Istreniruoti zuikiai :) Tikrina rega, ugi ir svori. Iseini ir vel sedi. Visi eina pas sesele... kitas srautas pradeda judet i rentgena. Pasa, skiepu kortele ir... toliau as nesupratau. Prisiminiau Tetanusa...

- Ne
- Kada buvai skiepyta paskutini karta?
- Nzn
- O kada nuo Tetanuso skiepyjo?
- Nzn
- Pries kiek metu?
- Nzn
Tada ji perbrauke visa lentele savo lapuose ir jau greit uzpilde viska. "Mission complete", - pasakiau Nathalie is administracijus parvykus darban. Labai juokingas vyrukas, turiu itarima, kad gejus, you never know :) Siaip stakliskiu butelaitis su medum jam praejo gerai ;) Taigis, uzeinu ir as pas ji ir sakau:
- Bonjour! ça va? Merci, bien.
- Jelena, you learned French?
- Oui, but it's "difficile"...
- Ce difficile :)

Tokie tie prancuziski nuotykiai... rytas sugadintas, bet pataisytas laiminga administracija, kadangi si karta as nepamirsau apie vizita pas gydytojus :)

DUK:
1. Kodel reikia lankytis tokiose keistose apziuruose?
- Reikia gauti leidima gyventi Prancuzijoje metams, mano atveju - iki 2008 Rugsejo pabaigos :)

Be to, daktarai jaucia pareiga atlikti savo paskirti visuomeneje ir padeti zmonem gyventi kuo ilgiau, o sirgti kuo maziau => maziau lankytis pas gydytojus.

3. Kas tas Tetanus?
- Stabligė. Lietuvius irgi vakcinuoja. Tik as tikrai nepamenu jokiu skiepu, darytu man bunant 15-16 metu... Kas nors pamena?

French vacations

The time I was going to come here, I heard that french people have really many vacation days. It was like 35 vacation days, whereas in my country we got used to having 28, which means roughly a month with all weekends.

Another thing that I have heard, that french thought of a diffirent system for unemployer - to redure the amount of hours that full time employed people can work per week from 40 to 35 hours. Nice, yeah? :)

However, when I started to work here fulltime, not as an stagerie, the administration has given me a !booklet! to read about the rules and all that stuff. You may think - what the hell? You can tell it. But this booklet is about 20 pages and it is worth of reading. The best part of course was vacations :) So, I explain the system as it is:
- 30 vacation days per year to every employee in France (about 2.5 days per month)
- 1 day per month for something, don't remember now, maybe it's called RRT
- 0.5 day per month for that we work normaly 40 hours a week and they are sumed up

As the result we can count:
30 + 12 + 6 = 48 days

Can you believe it?! Can you imagine that most of the french companies in August close for vacations massively? For them it's not enough that they subsidise their French pea*Z*ants from the EU money, they have probably the biggest number of free days per year in EU! And keep in mind, that French are not so much of workaholicks, as we got used in our '3rd world country'!

This number basically explains why I get only 17 lunch coupons per month instead of 20-21, couse I work only half of the month per year :D

Have a nice Monday at your work ;)

Uz ka as moku?!

Cia turint omeny, kad as nekonvertavau savo nuomos mokescio i baksus :)

Paziurejau i ta nuoma is kitos puses, palyginus su maisto ir transportavimo kainom, tai per menesi ju suma prilygsta vieno menesio nuomos kainai. Sakyciau tada pakankamai iseina, ane?

Noriu pabrezt, kad i sita sarasa as visai nenoriu itraukti Nicos, Monako, Alpiu, sakykim cia tik bonusai. Reziumuojant moki is siluma saules pavidale ir tame tarpe uz gera nuotaika ;)

Gera nuotaika savaime veda prie didesnio ikvepimo, todel cia gyvena ne mazai meninku, na ir siaip visas prancuziskas Silicon Valley cia bazuojasi :)

Bet ir siaip neimanoma nepastebeti kiekviena miela darbo dienos ryta mane bedziuginanciais vaizdais keliaujant darban:

P.S. Tiems, kas dar nezino, as gyvenu Grasse'o priemestyje vadinamu Saint Jacque

Sestadienis Rivieroje

Bet siandien as buvau issigandus kai McDonalds'e pamaciau didziule eile... tiek prancuzu mac'e - neitiketina! Ir kur gi dingsta tas gurmanu potraukis kokybiskam maistui? Velnias ji zino... Sumasciau tokius Mac'o pliusus:
- jei jami Meniu, kaip gerima gali issirinkti is 8 skirtingu gal, tame tarpe normaliausias prancuziskas alus 1664 :)

Taks... Renkames vyna!

O jus nesusimastet, kodel as begyvendama Prancuzijoje tiek laiko apie vyna net neuzsiminu? :) As pati tik dabar ta suvokiau. O paskutine para pagrinde buvo skirti apsivietimui vyno srityje! Ne tai kad as labai noreciau, ne tai kad man tai labai idomu, bet o ka daryt kai nuejes i parduotuve alaus vietinio jau nebenoris, eini i 6gubai didesni vynu skyriu ir... bandai pasikliaut savo instuicija?!

Ne, tai bloga praktika. Bandai daryt stai ka (dziaugiuos, kad jau bent skaityt +/- ismokau prancuziskai):

  • identifikuoti regiona, is kurio kiles vynas. Probelma - juk nzn jokiu regionu, nuo ko pradet?
  • ziurineji pagaminimo metus.
  • pasirenki vynuogiu rusi. Deja, tik vakar parduotuvej sugalvojau sita kriteriju. Bet praktiskai man tas nepasiteisino kol kas. Gal del to, kad pasirinkau misinius
  • apsiziuri prie ko tinka vynas - paskutinis kriterijus, kuri buvo imanoma sumastyti is vyno etikeciu :)
Taigi, eilini karta nusivylus ir uztaikius ant labai jau sausu vynu, nusprendziau edukuotis sitoje srityje, nes kitaip tektu mest gert! :D (na ok, radau is saldu balta vyna cia, bet ji kazkaip retai surandu, be to jo daznai neiseina gert).

Ko as griebiausi tai google ir mano nuostabai atradau vynogidas.info svetaine! Po keliu valandu praleistu ten pasijautau padariusi dideli zingsi i prieki vyno issirenkimo klausimu :) Nors dabar gal vistiek nieko gero neissirinkciau, bet bent zinociau kaip pradet degustacija ir atrasti Prancuzisko vyno skonius, kurie man butu prie sirdies. Vienas idomus dalykas apie vyna, kuris man iki siol lieka nezinomas tai kaip issirinkti bent jau ne sausa vyna, kurie sudaro dydziausia vynu dali. Deja, i sita klausima as dar nezinau atsakymo. O begyvenant Lietuvoje as atsakyciau paprastai - perskaityt etikete ar kazkas pan. Paprasta, ane?

Bulviu sezono atidarymas

O kadangi esu atvykus is bulvininku salies, tai be abejo keptos bulves - pirmu numeriu!

Gaila, kad jos nesuteike tiek dziaugsmo, kiek gimtojoje Lietuvoje... nera to keptu bulviu aromato, kazkoks jis visai vos jauciamas. Uztad tartar'as pas juos parduotuveje net yra :)
